Over The Edge

Explore the Length of Lake Tanganyika

The second deepest lake in the world (quiz question – what’s the deepest!?) and 420 miles long …. It’s also the second largest freshwater lake by volume …. (quiz question – what’s the largest?) and is bordered by four countries – Tanzania, Burundi, DRC and Zambia. Its large enough that it has its own weather systems and can develop big storms with high waves – but the best bit … its beautiful clear water!  Sitting on one of its sandy beaches is like being at the ocean …. Snorkeling is great and there are some great endemic fish – the cichlids.

The plan is simple ….. travel the length of it in a small boat ….. trying to be as self-sufficient as possible – so fishing etc en route.  Some nights just drifting offshore and sleeping on the boat and others pulling up on a deserted beach …. Plenty of exploration and perhaps a stop off at Mahale NP to see the chimpanzees but all to be decided.

We are thinking it will take about a week or so ….probably 2 weeks by the time we get there and get back (that’s part of the adventure!)

Lake Victoria to the Indian Ocean
Off Road Adventure

Looking for a challenge, perhaps a bit of competition?
We may have the perfect trip for you …. An adventure (or a race!) from the shores of Lake Victoria – the heart of Africa – all the way to a deserted beach on the shores of the Indian ocean – or if you are really competitive to a small tidal sand island about 5 miles offshore!

With as few ‘rules’ as possible (the main one being no tarmac roads!) the route will need to be planned and you will be as self sufficient as you possibly can be – navigating your way cross country, around and over natural obstacles from mountain ranges to deep gorges – stopping to camp from the back of your vehicle at night and sitting around the campfire under the star-studded African sky.

This is a chance to get away from it all and  put all your skill and ingenuity to the test – will you make it in one piece!??

Piki Piki (motorbike) adventures

This isn’t the Paris – Dakar on huge cross county bikes – roaring around and leaping off sand dunes – this is something altogether more adventurous!
Riding lowly Chinese 125cc motorbikes (SO much more fuel efficient) and carrying all your own supplies AND fuel (and don’t forget a bottle of your favourite tipple!) we set off cross country on the immense Massai Steppe – hundreds of miles of no roads and few tracks. Our aim will be to cross the Steppe using our wits and skills … with few maps its going to be a case of following our instincts and single-track animal trails for much of the journey …puttering along and enjoying the wilderness and solitude. Perhaps asking a passing Massai Warrior the best route (a constantly unreliable method of navigation!)

Sleeping at night under the stars next to the bikes ….. then continuing the next day …and the next
This is REAL exploration!

Sailing adventures with a twist

Dhows have been trading up and down the African coast and in and out of Arabia for literally thousands of years – and the design has changed little. For this of you who think you know how to sail – think again! – about the only thing we have sailed that gets close in terms of effort and poor windward performance is a dipping lug cutter! Despite that these is something magical and timeless about sailing a dhow – following the winds as people have for generations. Its hard work with zero automation but profoundly satisfying – the boats are all built locally – each area having a slightly different design – they are broad and roomy – at night you can either sleep on deck or find a sandy beach. We have no set routes or itineraries – it will depend on the season (the dissection of the wind varies at different times of year) and how long you have ….. but you will return re-energised and yearning for the freedom and lack of stress…

Vintage Vehicle Adventures

For the motor enthusiast ….. pick one of the iconic routes above and have a go in an iconic vintage vehicle.
Picture yourself traveling thought he same landscapes that early explorers traversed – in the same vehicles.
A collection of early land cruisers and Series I, II and III land rovers will make this and expedition to remember – and of course like all our expeditions you will be self-sufficient – a bedroll next to the vehicle and a campfire to cook on – a real step back in time!

We Have Wild Ideas About Adventures We Would Just Love To Go On One Day!

Some of these we have had a go at parts of, some we have flown over and dreamt of visiting, others we just thought would be a jolly good adventure …..

We are going to keep adding to this list …..but if there is something that catches YOUR eye then let us know and we will leap at the chance to set it up!

Mapping a coral reef …. There are some incredible coral reefs in the Indian ocean – many of which have never been dived or explored – this is not like a commercial liveaboard dive trip where they drive you to the best spot and you leap in …. This would be you being park of the team – analysing charts to find the most interesting spots and then hopping in the water to explore – we may even write a guide book for the folks that follow!

Latham Reef – lying about 50miles off the southern tip of Zanzibar this barren sand bar sits on top of some incredible waters – whether your thing is rod fishing, spear fishing or scuba this is a mecca to be explored! …reports of giant dogtooth tuna and other pelagics feeding on the rich currents from the deep – oh and whales and all sorts!

Namibia! …the vast deserts, the open coastline …just the space – crying out for exploration. The big question is how … motorbike, overland, self drive …so hard to choose
Philippine Island Hopping …. We are dying to head back and explore the literally thousands of tropical islands …. Cruising where the wind and our wishes take us – just SO much to explore we might need years!

Socotra – we have always been fascinated by this unique little rocky island lying between Arabia and Africa and its twisted and curious history & culture. We have a great friend who is setting up a camp there – desperate to go and explore the island with him.
East African Road Trip ….. we have explored a lot …but there are always little gems you miss – we would love to take a long road trip exploring some of the lesser known parks and reserves, towns and cultures – hitting festivals and migrations – slowing down and taking the time to immerse ourselves
